  • A broad representation of the biological sciences
  • A first year with course work and laboratory rotations in separate phases
  • Emphasis on the principles of scientific reasoning and logic as well as the importance of ethics and effective communication
  • Continued advanced course instruction throughout the graduate curriculum
  • Extensive mentoring and support in large part through our “two-tier” mentoring program

Invitation message from Zachary Lippman, Director of Graduate Studies, CSHL School of Biological Sciences:

Dear Colleague,

With our students and their individual goals at the forefront, the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory School of Biological Sciences streamlines and enhances all aspects of Ph.D. training.

Of note, our students complete their diverse coursework, laboratory rotations, and qualifying exams within the first year and our unique two-tiered mentoring program, allows our students to benefit from the mentorship of a research mentor and an academic mentor.

Even more, students are fully funded from the moment of acceptance – stipends, tuition, and research costs – allowing them to pursue any discipline and join any lab.

Our program is also further invigorating our commitment to student-first doctoral training. Below are a few examples of new initiatives to the curriculum, student development, and mentorship.

New curriculum on Shared Core Principles of Biology, embedded in the first year, to highlight the common motifs inherent across multiple complex disciplines
New course on Teaching & Pedagogy for Undergraduates offered in collaboration with faculty from the State University of New York Old Westbury, together with multiple teaching opportunities at nearby colleges
Mentoring opportunities combined with mentor training based on the curriculum by the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER)

For students looking for a highly personalized, rigorous, and dynamic graduate training experience at all levels, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is a place like no other. Please share this note with your trainees and encourage them to learn all we offer to help them develop their passion for discovery and become a next-generation leader in science and society.
